Specialist Cancer Care
at Home in across Surrey and London
A cancer diagnosis changes everything. When someone you love is going through treatment or living with cancer, being at home, in their own space and surrounded by the people they love, can make an enormous difference. Our specialist carers provide compassionate, practical support so your loved one can focus on what matters most.
What is Cancer Care at Home?
Cancer care at home is professional, personal support provided to people who are living with cancer, undergoing treatment, or recovering from surgery. It is not medical treatment. It is the practical, day-to-day help that makes life feel manageable during an extraordinarily difficult time, provided by a compassionate, trained carer in the comfort of your loved one’s own home.
The effects of cancer and its treatment, including fatigue, pain, nausea, and weakness, can make even simple daily tasks feel impossible. Our carers provide patient, unhurried support that enables your loved one to conserve their energy, maintain their dignity, and spend their time on what is most important to them.
We work closely with your loved one’s NHS clinical team, district nurses, and oncology support staff to ensure our care complements the medical support already in place. We follow clinical guidance carefully and report any changes in condition promptly to the appropriate professionals.

When Should You Consider
Cancer Care at Home?
Cancer affects everyone differently, and the need for home care can arise at any stage of diagnosis, treatment, or recovery. These are some of the situations in which families contact us.
Treatment side effects
Chemotherapy or radiotherapy is causing severe fatigue, nausea, or weakness and your loved one needs daily support to manage basic tasks at home.
Returning home after surgery
Your loved one has been discharged from hospital after a cancer-related procedure and needs professional support during the recovery period at home.
Family carer exhaustion
You or another family member is providing much of the care but is becoming overwhelmed. A professional carer can take on regular responsibilities to relieve the pressure.
Living alone with cancer
Your loved one lives alone and family members are not always able to be present. Regular carer visits provide safety, support, and consistent human contact.
A wish to avoid hospital stays
Your loved one has expressed a strong preference to be cared for at home rather than spending additional time in hospital or a care facility.
Advanced or progressive disease
The cancer is advancing and your loved one needs an increasing level of support with personal care, pain management awareness, and day-to-day comfort.
Night-time care needs
Pain, restlessness, or anxiety during the night means your loved one needs a professional, calm presence to feel safe and supported through the hours of darkness.
Emotional and social isolation
Treatment and illness have left your loved one withdrawing from social life. Regular carer visits provide companionship, routine, and a sense of connection.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Cancer Care at Home
We understand this is an incredibly difficult time and that you will have many questions. Here are honest answers to the ones families ask us most often.
How much does cancer care at home cost in Surrey and London?
Our prices start from £24 per hour. Our fees vary based on specific care needs and the location of the client. You can call us to arrange a free initial assessment or talk to our AI chatbot below for more information.
We always provide a transparent, written breakdown of all costs before care begins. There are no hidden fees, and we will discuss every available funding option with you during your free assessment.
What does a cancer care visit at home actually involve?
Every care visit is tailored to your loved one’s specific needs on that day. Visits commonly include personal care such as washing and dressing, meal preparation, medication prompts, light housekeeping, and companionship. If your loved one has an appointment at hospital or a treatment session, a carer can accompany them.
The specific tasks for each visit are set out in a personalised care plan prepared before care begins. The plan is reviewed regularly and adjusted as your loved one’s needs change during or after treatment.
Will the carer work alongside my loved one’s NHS team?
Yes. Our carers are experienced in working alongside district nurses, community oncology teams, GPs, and MacMillan nurses. We document observations at each visit, communicate any changes in condition promptly to the appropriate clinical team, and follow all guidance from the medical professionals involved in your loved one’s care.
We are a complementary part of the wider care team, not a replacement for medical support. Our role is to ensure that everything around the clinical care is managed with the same level of professionalism and compassion.
Can a carer accompany my loved one to chemotherapy or hospital appointments?
Yes, absolutely. Accompanying clients to chemotherapy sessions, radiotherapy appointments, outpatient clinics, and GP appointments is something our carers do regularly. Having a familiar, trusted person alongside can significantly reduce the anxiety many people feel around treatment visits.
Please discuss transport requirements with us during your initial assessment so we can ensure the right arrangements are in place for your loved one.
What funding is available to help pay for cancer care at home?
Several funding routes may be available to you. NHS Continuing Healthcare can fund care at home in full where a person’s primary needs are health-related. Fast-track CHC is available for those with rapidly deteriorating conditions and can be arranged very quickly. Attendance Allowance and Personal Independence Payment may also contribute to care costs.
MacMillan Cancer Support and other cancer charities sometimes have grants available to help with care costs. Your local authority may also provide a care package following a needs assessment. We are happy to discuss all available options during your free assessment. See all funding options.
How quickly can cancer care at home be arranged?
We understand that the need for cancer care can arise suddenly, particularly following a hospital discharge or a sudden change in your loved one’s condition. In urgent situations, we can often arrange care within 24 to 48 hours of your initial call.
For planned care, we allow a little more time to conduct a proper assessment, prepare a care plan, and introduce the right carer to your loved one before visits begin. Please call us as early as possible so we can act quickly on your behalf.
Can you provide overnight cancer care at home?
Yes. We provide overnight sitting, waking night care, and live-in cancer care for those who need support through the night. Night-time can be a particularly difficult time for people with cancer, with pain, restlessness, and anxiety often being most intense after dark.
Our waking night carers remain fully alert throughout the night, providing reassurance, practical assistance, symptom monitoring, and peace of mind for the whole family.
How do you support family members as well as the person with cancer?
We know that cancer affects the entire family. Our carers are trained to be sensitive to the emotional needs of family members and will always update you after visits, flag any concerns promptly, and maintain open, honest communication throughout.
We can also arrange planned respite care so that family carers get the time they need to rest and look after themselves. Our local care managers are available to speak with family members directly at any time.
Are your carers trained to support people during and after cancer treatment?
Yes. All SD Care carers receive training in supporting clients living with cancer and undergoing treatment. This includes understanding the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, recognising signs of infection or deterioration that require clinical attention, supporting clients with fatigue and pain, and providing emotional support with sensitivity and discretion.
Our carers are DBS checked, fully referenced, and receive ongoing supervision and support from our care management team throughout their time with us.
