Respectful Personal Care
at Home in across Surrey and London
Needing a little help with washing, dressing, or personal hygiene does not have to mean a loss of dignity or independence. Our compassionate, professionally trained carers provide discreet, sensitive personal care in the comfort of your loved one’s own home, on their terms and at their pace.
What is Personal Care at Home?
Personal care at home covers all the practical, day-to-day tasks that help a person feel clean, comfortable, and dignified. It is for anyone who finds aspects of their daily hygiene routine difficult due to age, illness, disability, or recovery from surgery. Our carers provide this support discreetly and respectfully, always following your loved one’s lead and preferences.
At SD Care, we understand that accepting help with intimate personal care can feel like a significant step. We take the time to introduce each carer carefully, build trust gradually, and always work at whatever pace feels right for the person we are supporting. Dignity is not a word we use lightly. It is something we actively protect at every visit.
Personal care visits can be arranged from as little as one hour a day. We are able to visit in the morning to help with washing and dressing, in the evening to assist with getting ready for bed, or at any other time that fits around your loved one’s routine.
- Washing and bathing, including bed baths where required, with full dignity
- Help with dressing and undressing, including choosing appropriate clothing
- Oral hygiene, hair care, shaving and grooming to personal preferences
- Continence support and catheter care delivered with sensitivity and discretion

- Skin care, including monitoring for pressure sores and reporting concerns
When Should You Consider
Personal Care at Home?
It can be hard to know when a parent or loved one needs professional support with their daily hygiene and personal care. These are some of the most common signs that it may be time to reach out.
Hygiene has noticeably declined
You have noticed your mum or dad is washing less frequently, wearing unwashed clothes, or their personal hygiene has changed in ways they would normally find distressing.
Risk of falls in the bathroom
Getting in and out of the bath or shower has become unsafe. A carer can provide steady, confident support and significantly reduce the risk of falls.
Loss of confidence or self-esteem
Your loved one has become withdrawn or embarrassed about their appearance. Professional personal care can restore confidence and a sense of self-worth.
Post-surgery or illness recovery
After a hospital stay, operation, or illness, daily personal care tasks can be painful or impossible to manage alone during the recovery period.
Family members finding it difficult
Providing intimate personal care for a parent or partner can be emotionally difficult for both parties. A professional carer can take on this role with no awkwardness.
Continence difficulties
Managing continence needs requires specialist knowledge and sensitivity. Our trained carers handle this with complete professionalism and respect.
A new diagnosis or condition
A recent diagnosis of Parkinson’s, MS, a stroke, or another progressive condition may mean personal care tasks are becoming increasingly difficult to manage independently.
Pressure on family carer time
You or another family member is providing personal care but struggling to fit it around work, children, and your own health. A carer can take on these visits reliably each day.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Personal Care
We know you will have questions about arranging personal care at home. Here are honest answers to the ones families ask us most often.
How much does personal care at home cost in Surrey and London?
Our prices start from £24 per hour. Our fees vary based on specific care needs and the location of the client. You can call us to arrange a free initial assessment or talk to our AI chatbot below for more information.
We always provide a transparent, written breakdown of all costs before care begins. There are no hidden fees, and we will discuss all available funding options during your free assessment.
What tasks does personal care include?
Personal care covers all aspects of daily hygiene and grooming. This includes washing and bathing, help with dressing and undressing, oral hygiene, shaving, hair care, skincare, and assistance with getting up and going to bed. Where needed, our carers can also support with continence care and catheter management, all delivered with complete sensitivity.
The exact tasks included in each visit are agreed in your loved one’s personalised care plan, which is written with input from the family before care begins.
How do you ensure my loved one’s dignity is protected?
Protecting dignity is central to everything we do. Every SD Care carer is trained to follow the person’s own preferences at every stage of a personal care visit. This includes always knocking before entering a room, explaining each step before doing it, using the correct form of address, covering the person appropriately throughout, and never rushing.
We also take the matching process seriously. We make every effort to match a carer of the preferred gender where this is important to the client, and we always allow time for trust to build gradually before care begins.
Can I request a carer of a specific gender?
Yes, absolutely. Many clients have a strong preference for a carer of the same gender, particularly for intimate personal care. We make every reasonable effort to honour this preference when matching a carer to your loved one, and we encourage families to let us know this preference at the time of their initial enquiry.
How many visits per day can a carer make?
We can arrange personal care visits at whatever frequency your loved one requires. Many clients receive a morning visit to help with washing and dressing, and an evening visit to assist with getting ready for bed. Others may benefit from additional afternoon calls. We build the schedule entirely around the individual’s needs and preferences.
Visits start from one hour, and we will not rush. The care plan specifies exactly what is to be completed at each visit so carers always have enough time to do their job properly.
What funding can help pay for personal care at home?
There are several funding routes that may help. A local authority needs assessment can result in a direct payment or a managed care budget to contribute towards personal care costs. Attendance Allowance is a non-means-tested benefit for people over 65 who require help with personal care tasks due to illness or disability. Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is available to those under 65 in a similar situation.
NHS Continuing Healthcare may also fund personal care in full where a person’s needs are primarily health-related. We are happy to talk you through all relevant options during your free assessment. See all funding options.
Will my loved one always have the same carer?
We prioritise consistency, particularly for personal care where trust and familiarity are so important. We assign a small, dedicated team to each client so your loved one sees the same familiar faces at every visit. In the event that a regular carer is unavailable, we always notify the family in advance and send someone your loved one has already met where possible.
Are your carers trained to handle complex personal care needs?
Yes. All SD Care carers receive thorough personal care training covering safe moving and handling, skin integrity monitoring, continence care, catheter care, stoma care, and support for clients with a wide range of conditions including stroke, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and dementia.
For clients with more complex clinical needs, we match carers who have specific experience and, where required, additional specialist training. Please let us know about any particular requirements during your initial call.
How quickly can personal care visits start?
In urgent situations, such as after a hospital discharge, we can often arrange personal care within 24 to 48 hours. For planned care, we typically allow a little more time to conduct a proper assessment, write a care plan, and introduce the carer to your loved one before visits begin.
We will never compromise on the quality of the introduction process. A calm, well-prepared start makes a significant difference to how comfortable your loved one feels about receiving care.
